Green Archiving explores the intersection of archival practice and environmental sustainability, offering a radical reimagination of digital and material archives as ecological entities. It critiques conventional recordkeeping methods, which often perpetuate resource-intensive and preservationist paradigms, and introduces the concept of ‘green archiving’ – a proposition to integrate sustainable technologies, practices, and philosophies into the curation, preservation, and dissemination of information. It draws on speculative theory, eco-criticism, software studies, decolonial and feminist studies to propose pathways for the future of archiving in the face of climate crisis. Through case studies, critical essays, interviews, and speculative designs, Green Archiving fosters a dialogue that balances memory and preservation with ecological stewardship for future generations.
