'The theme of urbanity, the tension between the built and the grown, is at the centre of my artistic work. In a narrower sense, I deal with CITY, with metropolises such as Rome, Istanbul and London, in addition to Berlin, the centre of my life. I am interested in the photographic transformation of my experience. The big cities are centrifuges of acceleration in the modern age and symbolise the great themes of our time.
Berlin is the centre of my life and the city of permanent change that is visible to me.
Since the 1980s I have created several groups of works about this city, beginning with inter esse, 1985-87 and now JETZT, BERLIN, 2013-16-(2022), which also show references to my life circumstances, my experiences. They are self-contained works that describe the respective period.
NOW, BERLIN, 2013-16-(2022) ties in with the examination of the phenomenon of the city and shows the essence of the historical moment of the city. Especially in recent years, Berlin has not only changed greatly in appearance, a socio-economic structural change is also taking place here, which is greatly changing the way of life and the feeling of living in the microclimate and also affects me.
Each picture stands for a specific urban or social area, e.g. city view, everyday life, migration, tourism, gentrification. The moment becomes a quotation, snatched from the NOW.' – Maria Sewcz
