When artist Armin Linke was invited to participate in a photographic project on the island of Lampedusa, he left his camera at home because he thought that there would have been plenty of photos available there. Instead, he took his wife on a trip to the University of Arts and Design in order to learn about the photographs there. Four years later, he approached German publisher Spector Booksabout the possibility of turning the photos and interview material into a book. The publishing house studied the pictures and suggested adopting the form of a photographic novel, in order to be able to comment on the photographs, thus creating an external perspective on the images. The three-year long research of the Migrant Images Research Group has been funded by the TURN Fund of the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
