KNOWN is a series of publications that promotes and celebrates contemporary Indigenous Australian artists, facilitating cross-cultural dialogue between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and writers. KNOWN elevates and amplifies First Nations voices; strengthening cultural knowledge, language, and artistic engagement. The KNOWN series is designed to foster knowledge exchange within communities and acknowledges contemporary Indigenous Australian artists on both national and international stages.
This publication features Tennant Creek Brio, an artist collective working on Warumungu Country. The group includes contemporary artists from Northern Central Australia and Naarm/Melbourne, and has made a name for exploring and reimagining cross-cultural identity, and articulating the realities of the unresolved tensions between Indigenous and settler colonial cultures. Merging Aboriginal cultural heritage, regional and international art influences, and the discarded materials of the mining industry, the collective’s intensely personal artworks draw upon layered intergenerational influences in their renewal and remaking of cultural practices, and their expression of collaborative resilience.
