Fleur Van Dodewaard's 131 Variations represents a play on Sol Lewitt's classic 121 Variations of Incomplete Open Cubes. While Van Dodewaard's initial intention was to replicate the project exactly, she encountered various problems and quandaries along the way. Some cubes went missing, some were replicated and previously unknown variants revealed themselves. In the end, the project demonstrates that the 122 variations listed and presented by Lewitt did not represent an exhaustive spectrum of all conceivable possibilities. In such a case, this stunningly produced book, which arrives courtesy of Fw: Books (Amsterdam), possesses a concurrent air of criticality, absurdity and possibility.
