I travelled to Silesia, one of Europe’s most polluted regions, to document Poland’s enduring reliance on coal and the impact it leaves on both people and place. Travelling through the small mining towns of Imielin and Bytom, Subside moves through these fractured landscapes, documenting sinking homes, abandoned façades, and the quiet persistence of those who stay. A polluted haze softens the outlines of buildings, while “Save Imielin” posters and school murals signal local resistance. Across these shifting and fractured environments, the work examines the tension between economic necessity and environmental damage, reflecting a dependency that binds communities to an unsustainable future. – Patricia Sofra

CCP.PE.ZINE is a new collaborative publishing initiative from the Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) and Perimeter Editions, dedicated to providing a platform for emerging photographic artists to exhibit their work in an accessible zine format. Each zine in the series – launched periodically in pairs – focuses on a single body of work by artists selected by the CCP.

Patricia Sofra is a photographic artist based in Naarm, Australia. Her work explores ways in which history and memory influences the perception of our environment and how tradition is preserved and passing.

32 pages, 14.8 x 21 cm, saddle-stitched zine, Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) x Perimeter Editions (Naarm / Melbourne).
