'It’s clear by now that the year 2020 will go down in history—and we’re only halfway through it.

An unprecedented and devastating Australian bushfire season, a pandemic causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and entire countries into lockdown, and massive protests in the US following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police, which quickly sparked an international movement of people fighting for Black lives and against systemic racism and white supremacy.

For so many, music is the thing that reaffirms the good that’s possible. There’s nothing greater for healing and for expression. And so we turn to music.
The process of putting together our first ever music issue has been like nothing else in the history of LOVEWANT. We began pre-pandemic, with Daniel Regan photographing pop innovator Charli XCX in Venice Beach, and Bob Jeusette driving to London to document Jimothy Lacoste. Our co-founder Imogene Barron, who returns as guest editor, travelled to Jamaica to photograph rising reggae star Koffee.

As restrictions set in we conducted our first ever online photoshoots. Over Zoom, James J. Robinson photographed Nadya Tolokno and some of her fellow Pussy Riot bandmates, and Arvida Byström photographed LA-based artist Chika. New York-based Micaiah Carter collaborated on a mixed media story with Moses Sumney. In Hawaii Quinn Wilson photographed and interviewed her girlfriend, King Princess. And Perth-based artists Benjamin Barretto and Caitlin Talijancich photographed UK-based producers and DJs Daniel Avery and HAAi. As restrictions in Australia began to lift, they met up IRL with fellow Fremantle local Kevin Parker, aka Tame Impala, to take his photos as well.

With UK-based art director Jack Reynolds on board we’ve got a brand new look, which we hope you love. We are energised and looking to the future. We hope you add all of the artists featured in LoveWant Issue 20 to your streaming service of choice, and be empowered by the positivity and insight they each offer.'
