OBJECT BOOK TALKS
Object Book Talks is a full-day symposium celebrating an object of design – the book – with leading designers and publishers. Through panel discussions, lectures and case studies, this symposium will offer insights into design practice and publishing today.
Designers make books: On process and the role of the designer
In this panel discussion, Dan Rule (Perimeter Books), Kelvin Soh (DayMonthYear), Anna Brown (Massey University Press) and Tyrone Ohia (Extended Whānau) will share their insights into the varied and expansive roles designers take on to bring a book to life. Moderated by Te Kani Price.
Closing keynote: Narelle Brewer
Narelle Brewer is a graphic designer and art director based in Naarm/Melbourne who, since 2013, has been designing with independent publisher Perimeter Editions on a variety of artist books, photobooks, monographs, and major institutional publications. In this talk, Narelle will share a range of publishing projects, discussing her oscillating influences and motivations in publishing, and the unique character of each commission. She’ll explore process, collaboration, and how creative intent informs design decisions – from typography and layout to format and materiality – in framing and amplifying the artist’s work.
