Perimeter x MGA Afternoon Residency

Perimeter is thrilled to be partaking in an afternoon residency and temporary bookshop at Monash Gallery of Art (MGA). The event will comprise a series of talks and book signings with Perimeter Editions artists – including Clare Rae, Rohan Hutchinson, James Geurts and Tim Coghlan – and a bookstore featuring a range of brand new titles from leading independent photobook publishers such as MACK (London), Libraryman (Stockholm/Antwerp), TBW Books (Oakland), Spector Books (Leipzig), Kodoji Press (Baden), Edition Patrick Frey (Zurich), Roma Publications (Amsterdam), Fw:Books (Amsterdam), SPBH Editions (London), Perimeter Editions (Melbourne) and more. The talks will take the form of in-conversations between artists, with each speaker introducing their respective book projects and exploring wider themes around their individual practices and photographic publishing.

Rohan Hutchinson is a Melbourne-based photographer. His practice questions ideals of landscape and the built, semi-suburban spaces that we live in. He has participated in residencies at Lethbridge University, Alberta, Canada, and the Centre for Art and Architecture, Kanazawa, Japan, as well as conducting research trips to China, Alaska and the Arctic. Hutchinson’s book An error has occurred was published by Perimeter Editions in early 2018.

Employing extensive field research and various conceptual and geographic methodologies, James Geurts produces site and time-specific projects, including the most recent project, Floodplain, which was shown at National Gallery of Victoria (2018). Geurts has exhibited widely, including White Cube, London; GEMAK, Den Haag Netherlands; Centre for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv Israel; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; La Chambre Blanche, Quebec; and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Geurts’ book Floodplain was published by Perimeter Editions in early 2018.

Melbourne designer and publisher Tim Coghlan has built his output around the results of both wayward and strategic Google Images searches. His latest and most extensive book to date Hell’s Gates (co-published by Coghlan’s own imprint Knowledge Editions and Perimeter Editions) is a vastly expanded reprise of a small-run zine he published in the early 2010s.

Clare Rae is a Melbourne-based artist. Her practice explores ideas of performance and gesture and ways in which they’re able to undercut or subvert modes of representation. Her photographs are informed by feminist theory, and present an alternate and awkward experience of subjectivity and the female body. Rae has exhibited widely; recent exhibitions include Entre Nous, Centre for Contemporary Photography (2018) and Unfinished Business, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (2018). Rae’s book Never standing on two feet was published by Perimeter Editions in May 2018.
