Perimeter Talks | Open Trade: Buying for Bookstores

Perimeter is thrilled to continue its programming initiative Perimeter Talks in 2018. Taking place approximately once a month on a weekend, the series features lectures, panel discussions and more casual in-conversations with publishers, artists, curators, designers, writers and editors. The talks explore and address various themes and issues relating to contemporary photographic, art and design publishing – helping demystify, challenge and offer insight into publishing as a medium and a practice.

Open Trade: Buying for Bookstores will explore the ideas, complexities and contradictions surrounding the traditional role of the bookstore book-buyer. The independent photography and art book trade may now leverage off the supposedly democratised space of the book fair and the online environment, but the bulk of bookselling still goes on amidst the infrastructure of the traditional bookstore. For our eighth talk of 2018, two of Australia’s most respected book buyers – Molly Monro of Metropolis Bookshop in Melbourne and Kim Hungerford of Kinokuniya in Sydney – will discuss what they look for in a publishing practice, their approaches to curating a selection, and how independent publishers and self-publishers can better approach bookstores and market their titles.

Molly Monro got her first job as a bookseller the year Nevermind came out. She became an art book buyer at Ariel Booksellers in Sydney around the time Sonic Youth released Washing Machine. She has been the manager and buyer at Metropolis Bookshop since the Twin Towers came down. She has a BA in Economic History & Government from the University of Sydney, has studied International Relations, and is currently undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Psychology at the University of Melbourne.

Kim Hungerford is the art and design book buyer and consultant for Kinokuniya, Sydney. Kim has 12 years experience in the book industry and is versed in all aspects of art book retailing, from distribution to merchandising. She regularly provides trend forecasting and consultation to art publishers, both locally and internationally. She has a BFA from UNSW Art & Design (formerly COFA).
