In his artistic practice – which spans installations, sculptures, drawings, paintings and exhibition design – Frei questions and revisits ideas and speculations about modernist forms. In particular, his interest is aimed at their potential to foster new perception and audience response. Rather than offering new interpretations and meanings, Frei's multifaceted works and their arrangement in space follow a line of open-ended, associative, even participatory possibilities. The book introduces Frei’s work in a similarly intertwined structure: six authors who have shared a long-term dialogue with the artist shed a personal light on Frei’s practice from different angles. The book’s somewhat extravagant title is borrowed from a novel by the American writer and poet Gertrude Stein. It relates to matters of time and change, of shifting perspectives that are central to Frei's work. These conversations never really took place – or at least not outside the author’s own thinking process. The interlocutors are not based on real people. They are not psychologically realistic characters, but ‘voices’ that speak and argue from the perspective of their specific functions within the field of theatre. They are perspectives and functions that the author himself has experienced and through which he has reasoned throughout his whole professional life, being an actor, a director, a teacher and still considering himself to be a student. The dialogue format offers an opportunity to engage in a dynamic and open ‘conversation’ with these different functions and with the reader of the text, without any hierarchy among them. Urban utopias from the Renaissance to the 20th century are reproduced by Stattler again and again, until the ideal city is multiplied into an ornament: fans and concentric circles, repeating bubbles and dispersing stars. In the detail, however, in the movement of the pencil that repeats the original, there is a liveliness that counteracts the “big plan” in a congenial way. The design of the book draws on portfolios used by urban planners and draftsmen. The pages are folded in a way that the drawings appear in their original size. Only at closer inspection does it become apparent that they are drawn in pencil. Fabian Reimann loosely maintains the five categories of the Catalog (Understanding Whole Systems, Shelter and Land Use, Industry and Craft, Communications, Community, Nomadics and Learning) and connects the visions of the late 1960s with current images that show developments, which can be traced back to the fantasies of these earlier times. Through the choice for specific materials and the way they are processed into totems of status, this body of work humanises the popular and high-end finery with which we rank ourselves and others through the lens of art. It plays with the totems by which we (un)consciously postulate our social hierarchy, allowing both the positioning of the art-object and the signalling of our status. Its ambition is to create a sense of the artistic space that Brey wants to offer, with a polyphony of voices and an immersive sphere in which a quality of behavior is of prime importance.
