Perimeter Talks | Beyond Representation

Perimeter is thrilled to continue its programming initiative Perimeter Talks in 2018. Taking place approximately once a month on a Sunday afternoon, the series features lectures, panel discussions and more casual in-conversations with publishers, artists, curators, designers, writers and editors. The talks explore and address various themes and issues relating to contemporary photographic, art and design publishing – helping demystify, challenge and offer insight into publishing as a medium and a practice.

Our fifth talk of 2018, Beyond Representation, will explore themes of identity politics, the female body within contemporary art practice, as well as notions of performance and how the camera can become a collaborator. Presented alongside Clare Rae’s new book Never standing on two feet (Perimeter Editions), this talk will take shape as an informal conversation between Rae and Hoda Afshar.

Clare Rae is a Melbourne-based artist. Her practice explores ideas of performance and gesture and ways in which they’re able to undercut or subvert modes of representation. Her photographs are informed by feminist theory, and present an alternate and awkward experience of subjectivity and the female body. Rae has exhibited widely; recent exhibitions include Entre Nous, Centre for Contemporary Photography (2018) and Unfinished Business, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (2018).

Hoda Afshar is an Iranian photographer based in Melbourne. Her practice engages with issues related to marginality, politics of representation, gender and displacement. Afshar is currently a lecturer at Photography Studies College, Melbourne.
